Volume 1 “Ostasiatische Lackkunst” (East Asian Lacquer) and
Volume 2 “Europäische Lackkunst” (European Lacquer) [both only available in German] Lacquer art, which originated in East Asia, has produced a plethora of decorative techniques and works of unique beauty and craftsmanship in the course of its 7,000-year history. From the 17th century onward, European lacquer workshops strove to imitate the highly admired East Asian role models. Not until the 18th and 19th centuries did European artists gradually move away from Baroque chinoiserie, developing their own techniques and turning to European motifs for inspiration. A selection of works from the collections of the Museum für Lackkunst provides an introduction to a multi-faceted chapter of East-West art and cultural history.
