Research

This further focus of the museum is first of all self-directed. At the same time, the museum management is fully supported by the museum owner both ideally and financially. In this respect, too, BASF Coatings AG follows an exemplary tradition. After all, both the firm of Herbig-Haarhaus and the industrialist Dr. Herberts as its precursors were committed to financing scholarly book projects devoted to lacquer.
The upshot is catalogues to meticulously researched exhibitions such as ‘Russische Lackkunst’ [‘Russian Lacquer’], ‘Sächßisch laquirte Sachen’ [‘Saxon lacquered things’], ‘Marie-Antoinette’ and ‘Schwartz Porcelain’ [‘Black Porcelain’] which have not only presented exhibits of international standing but have produced top-notch research results.
The two inventory catalogues published by Dr. Kopplin in 1993 and 1998 are just as ambitious in scope. One of them provides extensive background information on a selection from the many East Asian objects in the museum and the other is a complete handbook of European lacquer.
